Sorry, but I am amazed that there is such an open anti-black vote impending for the November election. Open, as in my own friends and compatriots from my local area are openly stating that "A black man will not win the election!"
THEY ARE FIRMLY CONVINCED.
I, while not so firmly convinced, find their ideas and some of what I have read on the internet to be solid in terms of votes!
I dislike Obama....not because he is black, but because he is both inexperienced, and a waffler of the 1st order. He has not found a topic upon which he cannot switch sides in an instant, and with no regrets, nor excuses.
However, there are.....by some viewers.....a huge number of folks who, when stepping into the voting booth, will vote against a black man.
I am somewhat sad to say, I agree. There will be huge defections from even the Democrats in this corner.
It is not how I would wish the GOP to win, and particularly with McCain as the standard-bearer, but I feel confident that the President will be McCain!

Lotus Cortina - I Loved It!!!!!
I owned one of the 500 Left-hand drive Lotus Cortinas in the USA for 1967.
It was an ugly little two-door sedan with the twin-overhead-cam 4 cylinder which was astoundingly powerful! It did 0-60 in seconds....usually faster than the muscle cars of that time period! Even those of the multi-powerful big v-8s! But it did lift a wheel when cornering...and made me VERY happy when driving!

"Yesterday, in their relentless drive to hide their culpability for high oil prices, Congress tried to pass a law punishing gasoline price gougers at the Federal level. There are many reasons this is a brainless idea. The fact that this sort of law is unconstitutional doesn’t matter because I’m not hopeful that our illustrious Supremes would see it that way. Another reason is that the phrase “price gouging” is so subjective and that would make it practically unenforceable. I have a better reason. One that Duke and I disagree on. I say there’s no such thing as price gouging. The only price gouging that ever takes place is because of government controls, not in spite of them. First, let’s deal with how government causes actual price gouging. Government sanctioned monopolies always lead to higher prices. One needs only look at phone companies, cable companies and airlines. Look what happens as those services are deregulated. Prices drop significantly when real competition is introduced into the marketplace. Congress wants to add more regulation to the oil marketplace. Does anyone with at least the common sense of a houseplant think that could bring down the price of oil?
To explain why laws against price gouging are counterproductive, let’s look at an example we in Florida are very familiar with. A hurricane has just hit and prices start to rise on many things. We in Florida are saddled with one of these stupid gouging laws, so I’ll explain what would happen if the government let the marketplace help people. Since opponents want to call it price gouging, I’ll use their term and turn it on its ear.
Price gouging is a hedge against hording. It allows for the stretching of scarce resources in an emergency. Let’s look at bottled water. For simplicity’s sake, water costs $1.00 during normal times. After the storm, the few stores that are open have a limited supply of water and the municipal water supply will be down for weeks. You have two choices. Wait for FEMA and die of thirst or go out and buy some water to drink. It now costs $10.00 a bottle. This “price gouging” insures that there is water for you because the guy that walked in before you only bought what he had to have because it was so expensive. With those wonderful anti price gouging laws in effect, the guy before you bought all he could carry at $1.00 a bottle. Sorry, we “protected” him and screwed you. No water for you!
Price gouging allows for faster relief. Using the above water example lets look at how fast water will get into a stricken area. Again, we can wait for FEMA and hope. We can also rely on big chains to bring in water as fast as they can, but they are not geared up to supply their stores to the level that will be needed without a municipal water supply. John and his brother notice water is going for $10.00 a bottle and they think “I can buy it here in Georgia for a buck and sell it down there for $10.00. They load up the truck and head out. Multiply that by 1,000 people and very soon, there is enough water to stave off disaster. Keep water at a buck and those people stay home. No water for you!
There is no such thing as price gouging. That is a made up term to get the masses whipped up. It’s Congress’s attempt at slight of hand. “Forget about how we’re keeping gas from you, we’re going to hurt the very ones that are actually selling you gas.” I watch this three ring circus and can’t help thinking about a quote from one of my favorite books, Atlas Shrugged. While the hero Hank Reardon talks to the political leaders of the time about how their policies have been a disaster and why they won’t change those policies, he says to them “It’s impossible for you to not see the failure of your ideas, what are you waiting for?” What are the Democrats waiting for? This is not a temporary condition. I don’t care if the Democrats control the Presidency, Congress, and Judges. I don’t care if they get every stupid law on how to repeal the law of supply and demand enacted, oil prices will not go down with their policies in place.

While Little Duke and I are a few points apart on Libertarian beliefs, strictly speaking, we are of-a-mind on this one. While My Son was too young to remember the fiasco of the 80s when we "controlled prices" and how the entire market tanked....I am NOT!
You will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER successfully regulate ANY form of free market. & FREE MARKET is what drives this country as the most-powerful engine on the face of the Earth. It is certainly NOT our government. One must only look at our congressional approval level, in the mid-teens, to know this.

"So Much for Religious Tolerance Liberals like to pay homage to the idea of religious tolerance. The idea that this country has many different ways to worship is something to be celebrated is what liberals say. They will take up arms (hire lawyers) for any oppressed religion or perceived slight to that religion. Leftists say that all religions and opinions are equal and must be allowed, if not celebrated. It goes deeper than that. Global warming has all the requisites of a cult. Every cult has a god, this one called government. This god is (or should be) all powerful. In fact, the only reason that our lives aren’t perfect is that we haven’t given ourselves over to the god of government and trusted it to run our lives. A very important tenet of any cult is blind belief. Its teachings must be taken on faith. Proof doesn’t matter, we must believe and not question lest we be labeled as deniers. With global warming, we are not to question anything told to us by the cult leaders. Cult leaders are a consensus of prophets and preachers. Yes, Al Gore is a preacher. Ed Markey (D-Mass) called Dr Hansen a prophet. Yes, while the left tries to remove all traces of religion from any public lands, they invite their prophets to speak on Capitol Hill. I can just see the enthusiastic Ed Markey (D-Mass) practically weep uncontrollably as the prophet spoke. Cults, to gather any strength, must have a way to communicate with the masses. Of course, the cult of global warming has the MSM. USA Today, on June 23, 2008 said the following of Dr Hansen: “The year of his testimony (1988) was the worlds hottest on record, since then 14 years have been hotter according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.” (Italics mine). While that statement may have been true at one time, NASA has since been forced to admit that Dr Hansen’s way of figuring the data was flawed. In fact, according to NASA's newly published data, the hottest year on record is 1934, not 1998 and three of the five hottest years on record occurred before 1940. I would think that the incredible reporters at USA Today would be able to do their research better, but the facts don’t work within their template. They won’t let the facts get in the way of furthering the cult. The final tenet of the cult is atonement. This cult’s atonement requires massive amounts of money be spent to right all the wrongs. Like any good liberals, they all know that all it takes is obscene amounts of money to correct the sins of society. Cults are usually not very dangerous to anyone except themselves. Where the cult of global warming becomes dangerous is that these cult leaders want to use the power of the government to make us all believers. Today’s Jim Jones’s want us all to drink the Kool Aid. ANWR - Making It Local!

The Democrats, and environmentalists would have you believe the exploration and development of a small portion of the Alaskan Natural Wildlife Preserve....the portion actually set aside for oil exploration when ANWR was created....would be an environmental fiasco.
By the discussion and vehement opposition, one would believe that the area is huge!
Little Duke, my son and sometimes contributor here at Pekin Prattles, put a pencil to the problem of just how big an area we are discussing.
But 1st, remember....we are not talking about a beautiful place here...in Summer there are mosquitoes which could carry off a full-grown man. In winter it is brittle-cold blizzard country hostile to all but the hardiest of critters. It is flat, featureless and inaccessible at all times.
Now for Little Duke's comparisons to bring into perspective the size of the Oil portion of ANWR!

This makes things look a bit different. We cannot drop our dependence on oil from countries with whom we are not good friends without finding another source. Alternative fuels are still in their infancy, and will likely be so for the next decade or more at the least!

Father's Day, Part Two!
Well, as mentioned in a post just down the page, I had quite a Father's Day. It continued after I got home!
Duchess prepared a scrumptious shrimp/scallop/pasta dish with a sauce to die for. In addition fresh steamed broccoli...with the prerequisite cheese sauce, and fresh sliced peaches. Y-U-M!
Before that, however, I laid back in my favorite leather recliner and switched on the HDTV for the finish (?) of the U. S. Open. WOW!
Tiger once again proved why he is head and shoulders above ANY golfer around. He came on with a final 12 footer that spun in to cap his round and send him into an 18 hole playoff against Rocco Mediate. Tiger, on a wounded knee still recovering from surgery, will go for his 14th. Mediate seemed just really, really happy to be along for the ride following a 14 year career as a pro, and seeking one great win!

Happy Father's Day!
What comprises a GREAT Father's Day? Well, for this Grandpa it is an opening of handmade cards from young grandchildren, phone calls from kids, a couple of neat presents, and the final quite satisfactory event....a trip to the Rays game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg with my Grandson Scott & about 300 of my fellow Elks Lodge members from the Tampa area (West Central District).
Everybody watch! I'll wave! That includes all our kids, and the currently-nine grandkids! Number 10 is due in September! The grands range from a 2 1/2 year old boy in Illinois up to a stunningly beautiful young lady who just-this-week turned 20 and managed to spend some time with us in celebration! Bless them all.
What about The Duchess, you might ask? Well, her interest is not in baseball. She'll be joining her lady friends at Shapes for a water volleyball game or three!
Then home from our various events for a great evening meal!

Yep, Obama wants to tax them rich folks and those greedy oil companies to help the poor.OOPS! Barry O didn't check to see who profits from oil company monies....BUT YOU had better check and know.....YOU most likely profit from big oil profits!Neal Boortz today explains for those who are slow or government educated!" Throughout the oil and natural gas industries only about 1.5% of the stock is owned by company executives. Now this statistic doesn't come from the oil companies themselves, the numbers – and the numbers that follow – come from Bill Clinton's undersecretary of commerce for economic affairs; one Robert J. Shapiro.
Here's what Shapiro has to say about the ownership of the other 98.5% of oil company shares: "The data show that ownership of industry shares is broadly middle class, with the majority of industry shares held by institutional investors, often on behalf of millions of Americans through mutual funds, pension funds and individual retirement accounts."
So ... when Barack Obama talks about a windfall profits tax, just who's money is he going to seize? He's talking about taking the savings, investments and retirement funds of middle class Americans.
Pardon my language ... but would you folks please wise up out there? Quit being so damned ignorant to what is really going on!

545 People Rule The USA
This is a lesson in civics for those who cannot or donot think for themselves:
"545 People Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.
Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits?
Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes?
You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does.
You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.
You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.
You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.
You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.
One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Su preme Court justices -- 545 human beings out of the 300 million -- are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.
I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.
I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.
Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.
What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.
The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? She is the leader of the majority party.
She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.
If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.
If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.
If the Marines are in IRAQ, it's because they want them in IRAQ.
There are no insoluble government problems.
Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.
Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.
They, and they alone, have the power.
They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses -- provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.
We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

I am wondering....Duchess and I have matching 750 watt Schwinn electric scooters (with "old-person seats" as my grandson, Scott calls them) in our RV. If I load the small wire basket behind me on the scooter with ice and beer/wine and drive to a beach on the campground for sunset, am I violating some Florida law?
Guess not, since I am not on a public roadway, but I'd better check the campground rules.

"Here’s a personal case study in how that works to squeeze workers out of the minimum wage job market:My parents own an ice cream shop, and rely heavily in its operation on eight 16-20 year olds working part-time schedules of 16-24 hours a week, along with one full-time manager who is assisted by my parents in their free time. Over the course of a 7 day work week, they typically employ the part-time workers for a total of about 340 hours a week.Raising the minimum wage by .70 increased their straight wage expense by $240 a week, or about $1000 a month. But it had collateral consequences as well, as their worker’s comp. and unemployment insurance costs rose in relation to their payroll, as did their payroll tax contributions. The combination of wage increase and the various increases that spin off that wage increase was about $1500 a month. This is against a total wage expense for the part-timers of about $8000 a month.Now, the ice cream parlor business is somewhat inelastic from a price stand point — people won’t continue to pay higher and higher prices for an ice cream cone when the alternative is simply to do without. So, that increase in operating expense could not, in total, be passed on to the customers. Instead, my parents worked a few more hours themselves and trimmed back on the hours they had the part-timers working. If they had not cut-back their part-time work force payroll, the minimum wage hike would have taken every bit of that profit away. Now they are working more than they want, and for a very modest annual return on their labor and investment. And two fewer teenagers will be employed by them this summer than was the case last year. The other six should have their resumes up to date."That is about as clear as could be. Not only that, but also we can extrapolate that out over an entire nation which employees its youth and college kids in just such small businesses, and find this to be true. In addition it HAS BEEN TRUE every time there has been a hike in minimum wage.

My children remember only a few movies, and fewer lines in their history books about this decisive and horribly-costly event!
My Grandchildren know nothing of it. The event for their small minds is as remote as Attila the Hun; or Ghengis Khan; or even....Vietnam.
I remember and salute all those who were there.
I mourn for those we lost.
I can picture in my mind the crosses in European cemeteries; row upon row of them.

A Tale of Two Books!
You know the name Scott McClellan; however, I will bet you have not heard of Douglas Feith. There is a good reason this is so.
Both wrote books about the Bush Administration in the run-up to the Iraqi war.
However, the Feith book differs from the McClellan book in two major ways. 1st, it is fairly supportive of the Bush side. That explains why you have not heard of it. The media will not even review the book since it does not bash Bush. 2nd point of difference? The book is backed by lots and lots of references for all Feith's points. In addition Feith has a web site with connections to the materials referenced in his book. You can check him out.
McClellan lacks that. He has nothing but his opinion for the most part.

WRITES ABOUT THE PROBLEMS LEVIN STATES!This was the year the Democrats could not lose the White House. Yet, while the GOP has taken every step necessary to insure they will lose a good piece of their already-minority status in the Congress, the DEMs seem poised to send enough votes across the aisle or at the least keep them home as to give the GOP Presidential candidate more than a good chance to prevail.
